"Active Strategies Still Valued.

[I]n mid-2016 there was about $11.9 trillion invested in equity index strategies – including exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds and institutional money – while the total value of equity securities was about $67.9 trillion. About $4.7 trillion was invested in fixed-income index strategies and the value of global fixed-income securities at that time was about $93.4 trillion.

Combined, about $16.6 trillion was invested in equity and fixed-income index strategies, while the total global value of equity and fixed-income securities stood at $161.3 trillion. In other words, index strategies account for a little more than 10 per cent of the value of global equity and fixed-income securities."

"North Korea's nuclear threat triggers $9.2B defense deal.

Northrop Grumman has agreed to acquire fellow aerospace & defense contractor Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA) for $7.8 billion in cash, plus the assumption of $1.4 billion in net debt. That works out to $134.50 per share for Orbital investors, up roughly 22% on Friday's close. Along with opportunities in large-class launch and in-orbit satellite servicing, the deal was motivated by Northrop's desire to increase its exposure to the missile defense sector...

Since May 1, strategic acquirers have completed 25 transactions in the space, per the PitchBook Platform, quickening the pace of what has otherwise been a slow year:"

"What 'Energy Security' Looks Like in the 21st Century.

This modern interpretation of energy security, which features flexibility in supply chains as its cornerstone, is becoming increasingly common in today's globalized world. And perhaps we shouldn't be surprised: Many of the most painful resource gaps countries have faced in recent years have stemmed from unyielding distribution networks at home, rather than steep drops in imports or sharp increases in price.

Meanwhile, the rise of renewable energy, electric vehicles and new ways of storing energy will further reshape the concept of energy security in the years ahead. As the world's attention shifts away from fossil fuels, raw materials such as lithium will take center stage. But countries won't necessarily need continuous access to these goods — or to the active supply chains such access entails — as they do today with oil."

"IMO warns on shipping bauxite.

Research presented last week to an IMO sub-committee found that certain forms of bauxite with a large proportion of smaller particles could be subject to a newly-identified phenomenon of dynamic separation when there is excess moisture in the cargo.

In such conditions, a liquid slurry – made up of water and fine solids – can form above the solid material, according to the research. The resulting free surface effect of liquid sloshing about could significantly affect the vessel's stability, leading to the risk of the ship capsizing."

"EU antitrust chief defends probe of Google, US tech giants.

The EU Competition Commissioner said this means a "responsibility not to misuse your muscle."

In a related matter, European economy commissioner Pierre Moscovici said in Washington he is open to all options on a tax reform that would enable the EU to obtain more tax revenues from Silicon Valley tech giants.

Moscovici's comments come after EU powers, led by France and Germany, said they were exploring ways to tax internet giants based on revenue instead of profits, which can more easily be shifted to low-tax jurisdictions.

He added that a number of options are being considered including taxing profits, revenue or "digital presence.""

"Low-Power Devices Use Backscatter to Transmit Data Several Kilometers.

As the Internet of Things grows, sensors and other devices must collect and transmit data while consuming as little power as possible. One way to do this is to take advantage of backscatter by having IoT devices reflect radiofrequency signals transmitted to them. Tuned properly, these waves can deliver information over short distances.

A team from the University of Washington, with the Internet of Things in mind, has expanded the range of backscatter to several kilometers. They showed that small sensors, transmitting signals using a special modulation technique, can backscatter data over greater distances than ever before."

"Scientists Find Way to Remove ‘Noise’ from Big [Metabolites] Data.

Like its genomic predecessor, metabolomics seeks to profile all of the metabolites present in a sample. Unlike genes, however, metabolites are not made from common building blocks and are much more chemically diverse. Familiar metabolites include molecules such as glucose and cholesterol, many of which are a product of diet. Thus, trying to pin down the exact number of metabolites in humans has been a tough challenge.

Thousands of signals arise from contamination, artifacts, and something called “degeneracy” — say, when one metabolite shows up as many different signals. The research team found that some metabolites show up as more than 150 signals."

"Self-healing catalysts make it easier to store solar energy with water.

Currently one of the most efficient ways to store solar energy is to transfer the energy to catalysts that split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then the hydrogen can either be used as a fuel or later recombined with oxygen to produce water and release electricity when needed.

However, one of the problems with using water to store solar energy is that the catalysts are made of earth-abundant elements (such as manganese, cobalt, and nickel) that corrode in water with a neutral pH. To address this problem, researchers have designed self-healing catalysts that can regenerate themselves in the presence of other elements, such as negatively charged phosphate or borate ions."
